東南亞是世界上華人最多的地方。而華人目前約佔馬來西亞總人口的三分之一。在馬來西亞，隨處可見英文華文相間的大字招牌。吉隆坡唐人街坐落在吉隆坡老城區南部，涵蓋指天街、茨廠街和後街幾條道路，包括馬來西亞大飯店一帶和必打靈街附近的華僑區，迄今已經有逾百年的歷史。這一地區道路四通八達，交通非常方便。

1880年英國人駐紮吉隆坡后，就把茨廠街這繁華路段給命名為 Petaling Street。理由不外是這條街在當時是通往 Petaling 礦地的主要通道，此外在當時的地圖上，于茨廠街尾左側的地方（即陳氏書院后方）就有塊山坡地被標註為 Petaling hill。當然也有人一廂情願的認為，是英殖民政府為了紀念最早發現錫礦的 Petaling 一地而命名。20世紀初，我們的祖先從中國渡洋而來，來到南洋謀求生計。這條老街道就是他們當年，在此開礦落腳的地方。茨廠街之所以命名為茨廠街，其實是有她的典故的。當年吉隆坡開埠功臣葉亞來除了經營礦業，也在這兒購置蒸氣機提煉木薯粉，而該區居民也常在門外曬木薯，所以將之命名為茨廠街。

現在墨爾本的Ｇlen Waverley, Box Hill 和 Hawthorn內，一間名為「茨廠街　Petaling Street」的餐廳, 它將吉隆坡茨廠街特色的美食帶到墨爾本，發揚馬來西亞的飲食文化，不在吉隆坡也可以親嘗當地的佳餚，令大家大飽口福。
